The Book
Dove: Mercy, Godliness. Scales: Obvious justice (also referencing the pound of flesh)
Lily: Dual symbol - In Christianity symbolises piety; in Byzantine thought symbolises material prosperity. Jesus refers to the 'lillies of the field'. God provides for those who renounce the pursuit of wealth.
Fleur de lis: Nobility, righteousness. Lion: Strength, courage, wisdom, justice (large use in heraldry). Griffin/ Gryphon: In Greek myth a sacred symbol of retribution. In early Christian symbolism it represented persecution, vengeance and hindrance. Large central flourish ties in a heart enclosing a smaller heart representing the bond that underpins the whole play. Caskets with elemental symbols. Uterine base, represents Portia, the strongest character in the play.
